Whether we like it or not things are moving forward. How are you approaching your brave new world?
There’s a lot to contemplate, and we can never be completely bullet proof, so how are you going to choose what to do first? Things that mean the most to you, or things that will avoid you paying some kind of penalty? A lot of people say that doing things that mean the most to you are the best way to get things done.
That may be true on many occasions. But with things being fired at you constantly, leaving things that need to be done can do serious damage to your business.
It’s generally accepted that avoiding damage is a lot better than having to worry about damage control. Yes, damage can’t always be avoided – we’re human after all. There’s a lot we should do, let alone can do, about avoiding damage.
If all you want to do, as a business owner, is get things done, you will have to accept that important things will be missed. Attending to the “low hanging fruit” won’t keep everything at bay forever. It’s only a matter of time before something will come and bite you in the ankles, or worse!
The other thing is that, whether you like it or not, the attitude you give off about the necessity of particular things will rub off on those around you. As a leader you have to be the one to set the tone, even if the ultimate decision is to get someone else to do the nitty-gritty stuff that you don’t want to do.
The question is who is the right person.
Finance = accountant. Legal = solicitor. That’s easy.
It’s less obvious to find the right person to help with the other stuff that catches people out most often.
Who would you look for to know more about making sure you don’t get caught out by the governing body for the product you sell as an accredited partner? Like wise for keep you staff safe while working for you, whether at home or in the office? Then there’s those things that you have to do or someone somewhere will find out and make you put your hand in your pocket and give them some of your money. That’s without dealing with the consequences of cybercrime.
The answer to finding the right person is as individual as the ethos within your business, but it can feel like trying to find a needle in a haystack!.
However, there is nothing to say that the person that helps a high-risk entrepreneur cannot help a risk averse industry like finance brokers.
It’s all about understanding the key issues, the ethos that runs within the company, the attitude of the people at the top and their willingness to be serious about protecting the business from harm – and I mean significant harm.
Significant harm to a local business would, or course, hardly be felt by a multi-national, except where that harm was applied proportionately to their turnover. The worst impact to a business is often thought to be the loss of trust in the brand. Consider how that may happen.
Well, I’m not going to give all my secrets away. Suffice to say there’s as many ways that it’s scary as the number of hairs that you have on your body scary! If that isn’t scary for you, it should be. All it means is that you do not truly understand the implication of particular types of things going wrong.
For someone that knows really what they are doing finding the right resolution means, first and foremost, researching. Saying you can find the right way to address a problem as a five-minute job is cutting corners. All it means is that you specialist is putting you through what you probably have never wanted – a tick-box exercise!
Always aim to do it right first time as not giving the right amount of attention to the resolution often means details have been missed what is proposed falls short. Repetition is what all involved see as a pointless waste of time – and I agree.
Let’s be honest though. No-one is perfect. Everyone needs help sometimes. You can’t know it all – well not by yourself. If you remember nothing else, remember that resolutions should be individually crafted, fit for purpose, efficient (in price too) techniques to put right what needs to be fixed.
Trying to plug a hole in a dam with bubble gum will not cut the mustard! Using a 3-inch-long bolt to fix a photograph is too heavy-handed. But there will be a right way for each. But you will need to find, figuratively, someone who can use bubble gum as effectively as a 3-inch-long bolt and in the right way.
Through the years I have seen people trying to convince business to do things like this by using fancy terminology. A lot of the time it is not needed. It just means finding the right person to be able to listen, appreciate your way of getting things done and providing a sympathetic way to move you forward.
